St. Michaels C of E Primary School in Kingsteignton has scooped first prize in a county wide environmental competition to find the Pennywell Green School of the Year 2008.

The award was presented by naturalist and BBC presenter Nick Baker here at Pennywell Farm. St. Michaels was one of four primary schools short listed for the award to give recognition and encouragement to the most environmentally friendly schools. The judging panel included Pennywell’s Managing Director Chris Murray, Dr Alan Peacock, of the University of Exeter and Environmental Consultant Tom Hills.

St. Michaels Primary was chosen for the schools innovative work in promoting high levels of environmental awareness and encouraging the children to develop a passion and understanding of their environment.

Pennywell’s Chris Murray explains, “We have been inspired by the outstanding entries from all the schools and particularly the four finalists. I am passionate about encouraging children to know that they can, and do, make a difference. We have found that in a world full of negatives, being green is a real positive.”Schools wanting to apply for the 2009 award can contact Valerie Bickford-Beers on: 01364 642023 for an application pack.
