Education at Pennywell - School Visits

Choose your activities

Create your own tailor made day by selecting from the activities listed below. Depending on the age group of the children and the activities selected you will probably be able to fit between 2 and 4 activities into a day.

Meet the Animals
From the miniature to the mighty, children can enjoy meeting a whole range of farmyard and other animals during their visit to Pennywell. Learn how the shire horses played a vital part in our farming heritage, bottle feed our orphan lambs, learn about the shepherd's year, milk a goat and hand feed our fallow and red deer. Feed the pigs and even cuddle a piglet. Meet our very own reindeer Prancer and Dancer.

Wonderful Water World
A firm favourite with new and returning groups. Find what lies above and below the surface of the Pennywell ponds. Water scorpions, tadpoles, dragonflies, snails, larvae, boatmen and stick insects to name just a few. Learn about their different habitats, food chains and behaviour.

Creative Crafts
NEW for 2006 are school activities which show the original fleece to the fabric process and encourage the children to take part in spinning and weaving on our wheel or by using drop spindles. Willow weaving can compliment our farm and water activities by making dragonflies, rabbit headdresses and other souvenirs.

The Farmyard Lunchbox
NEW for 2006 is the farmyard lunchbox. The purpose of this activity is to explain to the children the important role that a farmer has in the production of the items contained within the lunchbox, from a poultry or cattle farmer to the farmer who provides the wheat for their bread. The exact nature of your farmyard lunchbox will be discussed with the teacher in advance of your visit if you choose this activity.

Bugs and Beasties
Our very own Saxon lane provides a wealth of material for activities such as a mini beast safari, or another much enjoyed activity: worm charming.

Pennywell Earth Trail
NEW for 2006 is the Pennywell Earth Trail for schools. Make your own slide show from sources within the lane. All five senses are used on an exciting farm safari. This activity can also be used to examine and explore the plant life at Pennywell.
